Red and Grey Squirrels

The squirrel is probably one of the most recognised mammals in the northern hemisphere with its bushy tail and adaptation to living in close proximity to humans. The native squirrel of Britain is the red squirrel, they are usually seen in heavily forested areas and have disappeared from large areas of Britain where they were once a common sight.

Their decline may be due to the forestry practice of clearing large areas of conifers. The grey squirrel was introduced to Britain from the eastern United States. Firmly established in the wild, at the start of the twentieth century, the grey lives quite happily in areas of open parkland, gardens and hedgerow trees.
