Marmalade Cat Decorative Box

The ginger tabby cat or Marmalade cat hand painted on this box, was inspired by my friend's cat - aptly named Marmalade. He was a typical “in one minute - out the next cat.” He loved to lay in the flower bed on sunny days. I always said it was his basking in the sun that kept him marmalade!

This decorative box has a ginger tabby cat on the lid. The sides are decorated with the sun and the words: “Marmalade cats bathe in sunshine - keeps them marmalade”. The design is protected with acrylic lacquer. The perfect box to store your trinkets - or cat treats for your favourite feline friend!

Beautiful Ginger Tabby Cats

The tabby cat is believed to believed to have acquired its name from a type of silk. In Baghdad during the 17th century there was a weaving district named Attabiah. A particular type of silk taffeta with a watered effect pattern made there was exported to Britain. There it became known as tabbi silk. The coat of striped cats that were similar to the pattern on the silk led to the cats being named tabbi then eventually tabby cats.

Sir Winston Churchill was given a ginger cat on his 88th birthday by his private secretary Sir John Coleville. The cat was named Jock after Coleville. In his will Churchill requested that a marmalade cat named Jock should always reside in comfort at Chartwell. Jock was only two when Churchill passed away and lived on another nine years, and is now buried in the pet cemetery there. According to Churchill's wishes the National Trust, which inherited Chartwell on his death, has since had Jock II and Jock III in residence at Chartwell.
