Fox Mailbox
This hand painted decorative mailbox was inspired by a visitor to my backyard. One Autumn while looking out the dining room window I noticed a red fox come to feast under our crab apple tree. He/she visited most days for a while, then not so often until the last visit in the following January. I often wonder whether the fox is still in this area, moved on or possibly didn't survive the cold Michigan Winter. I certainly would recognise him/her again as this fox had only one ear!
Every time I observed him or tried to take a photo through my window I was puzzled by his ear “blending” into the background of autumn leaves. The lens on my camera not being powerful enough for the distance across the backyard. When I took out my binoculars to look, I realized it wasn't my imagination his right ear was missing, all he had was a little stumpy bit. Possibly the fox lost the ear in a fight or perhaps was born with it deformed. Scroll down to see detail of this beautiful fox mailbox.
I love foxes and enjoyed seeing them in England in both countryside and suburbs. So I am quite pleased to find them visiting here. When painting this fox I “restored” his/her ear for artistic purposes. I might love my little one eared visitor, but others may think a one eared fox on their mailbox a trifle odd or distressing.
