My design of dolphins entwined in a heart is burned into the wood. The design is hand painted in the rich earth colours that have been used by artists for centuries. The decorative box has been given a coating of acrylic lacquer to help protect it.

Dolphin Mythology

Delphi on the south-western spur of mount Parnassus in Greece was originally known as Pytho. Here there was a chasm from which vapours arose and the Sybil gave out phrophesies while inhaling the vapour. Apollo, god of music and prophesy, slew the monstrous serpent, python that protected the sanctuary. In so doing he freed the neighbouring countryside from the destruction the serpent had inflicted on crops, villages and pollution of the streams.

The serpent was the son of the earth-mother, Gaia and to make amends Apollo had to serve king Admetus for nine years which he did this before returning to Pytho as a dolphin. Apollo appeared in the form of a dolphin to sailors on a Cretan ship and brought them back to Greece. There he transformed himself into a handsome youth and appointed the sailors as priests of his temple at Delphi. The cult name for Apollo, Delphinios means dolphin and is probably how Delphi got its name.
