Celtic Dog

My love of dogs and early Celtic art influenced the design for this keepsake box and wooden plaque. The hunter's spear has a heart knot representing devotion and love. Choose a keepsake box to guard your little treasures, or a decorative plaque for a unique gift for the dog lover.

Certain animals in Celtic mythology were believed to possess special powers. Dogs were associated with healing, their saliva thought to have curative powers. Dogs represent tracking skills, the ability to scent a trail and companionship. These faithful protectors were the Celtic animal symbol of loyalty, devotion and unwavering faith and love.

Irish Celtic legend of Cuchulainn

Cuchulainn, named Setanta as a boy, was the mythical champion warrior of Ulster. Brought up by his uncle King Conor, one night his uncle went to a banquet at Chulainn the blacksmith's house. Setanta was to follow his uncle later after his game of hurling. The king was asked if all his party had arrived and he said they had, forgetting his nephew would arrive late. So the blacksmith let loose his huge and ferocious hound to guard his house. On arrival Setanta was set upon by the dog. Using his hurling ball he struck the hound a great blow killing it.

On hearing the commotion Conor remembered his nephew hadn't arrived. Conor and Chulainn ran outside expecting to find Setanta ripped to shreds by the hound. They were astounded to see the dog dead instead. Chulain was relieved but devastated he had lost his hound. Setana vowed that he would guard Chulainn's lands in his stead. So Setanta became known as Chuchulainn, chu meaning dog, from that day, and he guarded the pass into Ulster.
