The most common association is of black cats as witches' familiars. European pagan religions in earlier centuries were based on the natural world and sometimes witchcraft. As christianity spread witch hunts in the 15th and 16th centuries concentrated on solitary women. A lot of these women had cats for comanionship that were looked on as familiars; especially if they were black - colours associated with mystery, magic and the devil.
In Norse mythology, Freya the goddess of love was said to ride a chariot pulled by two black cats. She was also associated with the destructiveness of winter and known as Hel in germany. In Finland the superstition was black cats carried the souls of the dead to the other world. One Scottish superstition says a black cat on the porch brings prosperity. The Celts thought they were the reincarnated, able to see into the future.
One of the most famous stories reinforcing the superstition that black cats bring good luck is that of King Charles I of England. He believed his black cat brought him good luck. Afraid of losing it he had it guarded. The day after his cat died, Oliver Cromwell had the king arrested and soon after executed.
